actor Patrick Swayze has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, his agent has confirmed. However, his doctor said reports that the Dirty Dancing star had only five weeks to live were "absolutely untrue". The 55-year-old is currently undergoing treatment and is continuing with his filming schedule. Swayze, who also starred in the hit film Ghost, was diagnosed with cancer more than a month ago, the New York Post reported on its website. His doctor George Fisher said in a statement: "Patrick has a very limited MOGkids amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far. "All of the reports stating the timeframe of CarolinaShuttle prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue." A publisher has agreed to delay the release of a Harry Potter encyclopaedia after being sued by author JK Rowling. Publisher Roger Rapoport said the book will not be published until a judge rules on whether it violates Rowling's intellectual property rights. A judge in New York has issued an order barring completion, distribution, marketing or advance sales of the book until further notice. Written by Steve Vander Ark, it was scheduled for release on 28 November. Entitled Harry Potter Lexicon, it is based on material from an internet fan site of the same name. Mr Rapoport, whose company is based in Michigan Apandisit , said he had given a copy of the Lexicon to Warner Bros lawyers - DonateAuction who hold the copyright to the Harry Potter books - in the hope that they would read it and decide that it did not violate copyright. "I think they should drop it. I'm hopeful that they will," he said.
 

Police have raided the house of singer Amy Winehouse after four men were arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. The arrests relate to an upcoming court case involving Ms Winehouse's husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who faces charges of causing grievous bodily harm. The couple were not at their home in Camden, north London at the time of the raid on Thursday evening. Police refused to confirm if Mr Fielder-Civil had been arrested. A police spokesman confirmed there was "police activity" at the property on Thursday evening and said it was part of an "ongoing police operation". A spokesman for the singer said: "The only thing I can tell you is that it has nothing to do with drugs and that Amy is fine and she has not been charged or arrested." Her record label said the first dates of her UK tour, which was due to start at Manchester's Apollo next week, had been moved to 12 and 13 December, but this was unrelated to the incident at her home.
 

Britney Spears must provide a working telephone number so she can be reached for drug testing, a court has ruled. Ex-husband Kevin Federline's lawyer told the court there had been 14 requests for drug testing and she failed to respond to eight of them. Ms Spears' lawyer argued the singer had not responded within the ordered timeframe because she was sleeping. Mr Federline was granted full custody of sons Sean Preston, aged two, and one-year-old Jayden James in October. "There needs to be one number that the testing facility calls that she responds to," Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon said. He added that she could change phone number, as long as everyone involved was notified. 'Perfectly clear' Mr Gordon said the process should be perfectly clear for Ms Spears. "You get a call, answer the call, set up a meeting, get the test," he said. Mr Federline's lawyer also told the court he did not want Ms Spears to be behind the wheel when their two sons are in her car, "to protect their safety". In 2006, Ms Spears was photographed driving with son Sean Preston on her lap, and authorities visited her home to investigate. Under current orders, Mr Federline has primary custody of their sons because Ms Spears had allegedly defied court orders - including an order to submit for drug-testing.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has said he is working "backstage" to try to help end the screenwriters' strike in Hollywood. "I think it's very important we settle that as quickly as possible, because it has a tremendous economic impact on our state," the former actor said. The strike, by the Writers Guild of America (WGA), was prompted by a disagreement over royalty payments. Writers walked out on Monday to take part in their first strike since 1988. TV production was hit as work ground to a halt on several prime-time series, and most late-night talk shows were forced into screening immediate repeats. Out of work If the strike drags on, most scripted comedies and prime-time dramas are expected to shut down production by the end of November. Production stoppages have put many hundreds of crew members out of work - from hairstylists and make-up artists, to camera operators and carpenters - with the fallout rippling through the local economy. "That's the sad story, because the studio executives are not going to suffer, the union leaders are not going to suffer, the writers that are striking, they are not going to suffer. Those are all people that have money," Mr Schwarzenegger said when asked about the strike.
 

Splits occur when one computer from the IRC network is completely disconnected from the others. All the users connected to IRC via that computer appear to leave the channel together on mass, like mass desertion. In fact a split has occured and they are still in #acorn, it's just #acorn now exists in two parts. Those not affected by the split can still chat as normal. Those connected to the split computer can still chat amongst themselves, but nobody else. To them it also appears like mass desertion as all the users leave together. Eventually the split will mend itself and the users who had left will all join together again (this always looks a bit suspicious when 10 odd users all appear at once!) and this is a way of telling splits have occured. (plus most of the non split IRCers will be moaning about the split!)

Usage: AKILL <nick|user@host> <reason> [<time>]
This will place a kline on all servers that are connected to your server, thus preventing someone from logging into the entire network. You can use the nick for a user who is currently on the chat network and the network will akill that user's address. You must include a reason for the command to work.
Note: If a server is split off when the akill is placed, it will not be present on that system. To get a list of akills on your server do a /STATS k and look for the lines that are prefixed with A: instead of K:. See rakill and unakill to remove an akill. Akills must end with either text, or the time parameter. If no time parameter is given, the akill will be placed indefinitely.

An akill is a way of banning someone from the chat network. It is a last resort when warnings and kills did not keep the person from misbehaving. An akill works basically the same way that a channel ban works, except that it prevents someone from logging into the network rather than from just joining a channel. Akills are network bans. They will prevent anyone who matches their description from joining the chat network. They should be added as necessary to ban users who have been causing problems, but in almost all cases they will also ban innocent people from the same service provider. This is why most bans should be temporary. People who cause serious problems should be reported to their service providers with logs explaining what they have been doing.
